Education Savings Accounts
Programs that provide opportunities for families to open tax-advantaged bank accounts which encourage savings to cover future post-secondary education expenses, or which "seed" accounts for children in anticipation of ongoing contributions. Registered Education Savings Plans (RESPs) can be registered for any child with the government of Canada. They are provided by most financial institutions (such as banks and credit unions), as well as certified financial planners and group plan dealers, and grow tax free until the child is ready for postsecondary education. Children with RESP accounts may also be eligible to apply for other savings incentives such as the Canada Learning Bond, the Canada Education Savings Grant or province-specific grants.
