Description and Service Details

Description (Service)

Programs and services offered by the Recreation and Culture department work towards being accessible and inclusive to all members of the community including those with:

  • intellectual or physical disabilities
  • attention and behaviour difficulties
  • vision and hearing impairments
  • learning disabilities
  • allergies or medical conditions
  • support workers are welcome to attend all programs
  • staff may request additional personal information from the support worker for emergency purposes
  • even though programs and services are integrated, some individuals may require enhanced support to participate

Sensory Kits (for ages 3+)

  • sensory kits can be borrowed from the facility's Customer Service desk
  • for use while at the facility and must be returned before closing
  • Kits contain:
    • noise cancelling headphones
    • colouring worksheets
    • pencil crayons, and
    • fidget toys

Specialty programs offered include:

  • Aquadapt
    • one-on-one swimming lessons for participants with disabilities
  • Healing Waters
    • a non-instructional swimming drop-in for those who require space and time in the pool to work through prescribed exercises independently or with a personal therapist
  • Sensory Swim
    • Inclusive drop-in community swim for individuals with disabilities and their family or friends
    • offers a lower participant capacity to create a more relaxing environment and sensory friendly space 
  • Skate Your Way
    • an inclusive drop-in community skate with a lower participant capacity and no music providing a more relaxing environment and sensory-friendly space
    • pucks, hockey sticks, and other equipment are not permitted on the ice

Camps

  • Inclusion Support Program (ages 4-12)
    • offers a one-on-one support program for camp programs where participants with disabilities will be paired with a staff person trained in inclusive recreation at their location of choice to ensure a safe and fun camp experience
  • Kid's Adventure Program with low-ratio (ages 8-12)
    • a traditional camp day with a lower 1:4 leader to child ratio
    • days filled with games, crafts, stories, and songs as participants build lasting friendships with one another
  • Teen Adventure Program (ages 14-21)
    • provides youth with disabilities the opportunity to get active and make friends in a summer camp setting
    • typical group size is 12 participants with a 3:1 participant to staff ratio
